How to Make Money from your Blog Part Three – ‘Content’

Author: Brian Ringland

Choosing your topic or main focus. It is why you are reading this article in the first place. So let us make sure we go over all the relevant points of what does and what does not attract people to your page. Right off, as usual do more research on the topic you have chosen to write about. Even if you are passionate and are an expert on the subject you are writing about – do more research. Ask yourself; is there a niche for this topic? Is your topic topical? Are there many other blogs and websites devoted to the same topic that you are writing about? Can your subject matter be easily linked to affiliates? For example, if your blog is about photography, lenses in particular, you would look for an affiliation with a lens reseller or manufacturer and post an ad or a link-back on your page. Some websites have an entire page devoted to listing links to their prospective partners. The focus of this chapter is Content.

The single biggest consideration in this whole process so do not just “throw anything up for now” and fix it as you go. Nobody likes ending up at a site that is “under construction” when they are looking for something on the Internet. Nobody goes back to that site either by the way. Have all of your text editing and formatting completed before you start adding it to your page. Proof read everything too many times. Do not skimp or simply ‘flesh out’ your page or site either. Most people who come to your page will be looking for very specific information. If they cannot find or see this information right away they will leave your page. Think about what you have written or are writing. Is the topic easily up datable? Will you need to update the content to keep it fresh or will you have to replace it completely on a regular basis? Will you be allowing people to comment on your writing or article? If this is a blog we are talking about then you should consider allowing comments as this is another way to bring traffic and subscribers to your page or site. Consider putting your content in chapter form so you can easily submit chapters as articles to ezine websites and other blog directories.

Naturally your article would contain a link to your site or blog which would increase the exposure and traffic to it. This is one way of making your blog or websites content work for you. Like all good stories or articles, use a declarative opening statement at the beginning of your content. This text is usually the text you see directly underneath the name of a listed website in search results. If the blog or website has no added description in its page code this “opening text” is used as a description for your blog or website when someone does a search for it.

About the content of your blog or website. By content I mean the main body or bodies of text on the page or throughout the website. You either have awesome material that you have written or awesome material that you are going to write. Be topical. Do some basic research. For instance, what are some of the most popular search terms used on search engines? Can or does your material relate well to those searched out terms? The more they do the more people will search out and find your page. Here is the problem. There are a lot of great subjects to write about and a ton of talented people out there writing about them right now and they ALL have blogs as well. So how do you make your blog stand out? How do you attract people to what you are saying or what you have to offer? Well, you start with a great topic and write about it. Be very critical of what you are writing. Make it shine. Use chapter form where ever possible. Spell check a dozen or so times, (you will still find the odd this or that after a dozen or so checks). Once you are absolutely sure it looks good then and only then add it to your page. For more of this article see the resource listed below.

What You Should Know About Blog Marketing

Whether you are a new blogger, or one that has been blogging for a while, you are probably wondering how to get more sales, visitors, and readers to your blog on a weekly basis. Marketing your blog the right way will give you the results that you are looking for. You are going to find that you can not just make a blog, post in it a couple of times, and then expect for the world to find you. That just will not happen how much you wish for it. However, you can market your blog effectively, and get the results that you are looking for.

To begin blog marketing you first need a blog. The next step is to ensure that your blog is updated frequently. Post content in your blog regularly for the best results. Some will post once a day and others once a week. Whichever it is, be consistent with it and know that it will pay off to continue posting as you should. This is a great way to get started with blog marketing. You wont have a blog to market if you do not post in it regularly.

While most free blogs all look the same, you can make sure that your blog design stands out. You don’t want your blog to look and feel like everyone else’s, so make it different. Having your own look is a huge plus in the blog marketing world. You will find that most blogs all look the same and you can have your own look by just using HTML and adjusting the code to suit your taste. You are going to see that this will truly make a difference with your blog as well as your readers.

Try to get a theme that is going to match the market that you are promoting in your blog. Doing so will make it look even more professional. You don’t want your readers to confuse your blog with others do you? If this is something that you are concerned about, you will definitely want to make sure that you change yours to make more personable. However, if you are not worried about it or concerned about it in the least, you can leave the design as one of the free templates that you see so frequently used.

Something else that will help you with your blog marketing is exchanging links with authority blogs and websites that are in your same market is another great way to get the word out about your blog. The authority sites are going to have a higher page rank, and will also be listed high in Google’s search results. So do some searches and check those out and see if they are up to exchanging links. If they are not, you could always just add those into your blog roll. You do not need permission to do that if they are not into linking.

However, in the world of blogs, most blog owners are thankful for all links, and are willing to return the favor. This is a great way to market your blog that some do not think about or use. If you use this technique to get your blog seen, you will not be sorry. You can even use this for website marketing, and you will see a lot sites do that.

Blogging as a phenomenon grew from the connectivity of the internet, and with internet access almost as common in homes and businesses as the phone, people are finding that it is a very beneficial tool. In fact, the internet is having the same type of impact on people’s lives as the introduction of the telephone once did, broadening connections around the globe, allowing them to keep in touch, do business, and store data. And creating a blog sets up one of the most useful of the new internet tools.

Blog entries are more like a personal journal than anything else, even when used for business purposes. The word “blog” is a shortened form of “weblog,” which is itself a combination of “web” and “log.” So the blog is like a log of someone’s thoughts on particular topics. The writer posts a blog entry, perhaps once a day, discussing everything from what the cat did that morning, to book reviews, to business information.

Blogging came from dissatisfaction with how the first internet websites worked. Initially, individuals and businesses created sites that were more like encyclopedia or dictionary pages than anything else. All the pages did was to provide information that viewers were to sit and absorb. Eventually, however, designers and viewers recognized that this did nothing to build relationships or to convey that the website owner cared what they thought. Something more personal and even interactive was needed. So the blog phenomenon began as an electronic diary, where people recorded their daily thoughts. Each blog post included a spot for readers to add comments, and eventually communities formed, comprised of people interested in the topics discussed in the blog.

Companies started to make blogs the place where customers would read the latest business news. Blogging presented the information in a much more conversational way, making the presentation more like a chat than a lecture with facts and figures. Those are still on websites, and if someone is interested, he or she can find them as needed. But business is no longer the authority on high, telling customers what is good for them.

Businesses also soon discovered that the other benefit of blogs was the Comments section, where customers could finally give concrete feedback. Through the response to bloggers, companies began learning what their customers actually wanted from them, possibly for the first time. They could eliminate or modify products, improve service, and add services that were in high demand. Customers, in turn, were impressed that they could influence the direction the company took.

Now most companies have recognized how useful and important blogging is to their public relations and prosperity. Whether it’s a small business or a larger firm, learning from and responding to customers’ comments on the company blog helps build loyalty and improve services. Individuals are also relating in new ways, sharing interests with people halfway around the world. If people really want to have an impact on the internet, then this is one of the most effective ways to accomplish that end.

Designing and installing blogs is easy if you follow the four steps to create a blog below.

The net is so huge already but it still has room for more blogs, more websites and more advertisers, so if you want to share your pastimes and make a bit of money promoting affiliate products, then blogging is for you.

When you have created your blog, you can post articles and messages, videos and photographs and contact friends as well as displaying advertisements to earn some money.

However, I’m running ahead here because first you need to follow these four steps to create a blog.

Step one: Find a blog hosting account

If you don’t already have your own web hosting service, then you need to find a place to publish your blog so that it will be accessible to web surfers.

There are plenty of blogging companies out there which offer unpaid services but these will have slightly limited features compared with a paid service.  Even So, if you don’t need anything too elaborate, a free service will be sufficient; just type “free blogging services” and “free blogging software” into Google search, for a list.

Step two: Personalise your blog

Many of the blog software packages have free features which enable you to personalise your blog and really make it your own as well as adding functionality.

Change the template.  Find a template which you like and which fits with your subject.  Generally, a template will give you a choice of arrangement and colour scheme.  If you are familiar with html, then you will be able to change the code of these yourself.   There are plenty of places which offer free templates on the internet; for example:

BlogSkins – Templates from BlogSkins are useable with blogging services such as Blogger and MovableType software.

Blog Fashions allow you to copy or alter their featured templates but they are only useable with Movable Type software.

Blogmaker offers a huge number of templates to choose from as well as tools which will make blogging easy.

Use tagboards.  Tagboards, like templates use html code but tagboards allow instant comments and messages.   Again, do a Google search for “tagboards”.

Add games or animations to make your blog a fun place to be.  These will give your blog a sense of dynamism and liveliness and they can be found by searching for “animations”.

Step Three: Add your own bits and pieces

There are lots of extra bits and pieces that you can add such as a Blogroll (list of links), Tweet My Blog, other social bookmarking services, Amazon and AdSense, to name but a few.

Step Four: Add content

You can add other people’s content if you want, particularly if you use Firepow blogging software which incorporates a neat tool to collect relevant content.  However, your own unique content is likely to attract more visitors.

If you follow these four steps to create a blog, your own will be published in no time.
