How Do I Fix A Radiator That Isn’t Flowing The Antifreeze Properly?

I just replaced my radiator but for some reason the fluid isn’t making it through the tubes to cool down the engine. What is my problem and how can I fix it? It’s an old 1976 Chevy C-20 pick-up with a 350 engine.

It is your water pump that is bad. The water pump circulates the antifreeze to cool your engine. Make sure the thermostat is working first.

  2. Water pump blades are worn or a thermostat is stuck if it’s a coolant “flow” problem.
Good thing is both are cheap and easy to fix with those old trucks.
What about your fan clutch? It should be a little stiff or have some resistance to turning it, it should not turn freely or easily with the motor stopped.
If it’s bad you’ll notice the temp. rise at a stopping times, not when going down the highway with the air naturally flowing through the radiator.

most likely the thermostat is bad or you’re not getting all the air out of the system. I would replace the thermostat just for preventive maintenance and when you fill it with coolant remove the heater hose near the front of the engine. Fill with coolant until you see fluid come out the tube. replace hose and top off radiator. In my 35 years as a mechanic I have seen very few water pumps when the impeller was bad. it’s possible but happens seldom
